Kamin’s photographs do not merely serve as “records,” but exist as objects, traces and dialogues with time. His works reveal the intimate connection between art and life through a practice that crosses media—lines, painting, sculpture, installation, social action, and spiritual practice. Everything merges into an inseparable quest, where art and life unfold in harmony side by side.
For Kamin, living itself is an art—every breath taken, every ray of light passing through the eyes, every sound heard, every touch felt at the fingertips becomes a path for expressing thought and feeling in that moment. He regards everything around him as a medium, and every instant as an expression. Art, therefore, does not occur only on canvas or within galleries, but every time he looks, sees, feels, and touches.
In this exhibition, Kamin’s photographs do not function merely as reflections of visible reality but open up as spaces for the rebirth of thought and feeling. Each image reveals the value of ordinary things—people encountered along a journey, or the paths once walked.
These elements, often overlooked, are elevated as art that coexists inseparably with daily life and spiritual pursuit. A Retrospective through Photography presents Kamin’s photographs as traces of a cross-media practice that marks a continuous journey, as images-as-objects carrying meanings and qualities of their own, and as images-as-dialogues between the artist and society. Together, they point to the understanding that, for Kamin, art is not something distant or alien, but a way of being in the world—quiet, simple, and profound.
About the Artist
Kamin Lertchaiprasert (B.1964 in Lopburi, Thailand)
Kamin Lertchaiprasert is a well-established Thai artist who has worked in a variety of media including painting, installation, printmaking, and sculpture. His works have been collected by many private and public collections, notably, Sitting (Money) (2004–2006) that was acquired by the Guggenheim New York in 2012.
Lertchaiprasert has had solo exhibitions at the Numthong Gallery, Bangkok, Thailand (2000, 2001, 2003, 2009, 2012, 2014, 2017, 2020 and 2021); Art U-Room, Japan (2002, 2005, 2009 and 2014), MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum, Chiang Mai, Thailand (2016); nATTA Gallery (2019), Ratchadamnoen Contemporary Art Center (2021) and ATTA Gallery, Bangkok, Thailand (2021).
Notable group exhibitions include the Sydney Biennial (1993 and 2012); Utopia Station, Venice Biennale (2003); Busan Biennial, South Korea (2008); Meta-question: Back to the Museum Per Se, Guangzhou Triennial, China (2011); Negotiating Home, History and Nation: Two Decades of Contemporary Art in Southeast Asia 1991–2011, Singapore Art Museum, Singapore (2011); Secret Archipelago, Palais de Tokyo, France (2015); Edge of The Wonderland, Thailand Biennale Krabi, Thailand (2018) ; Leaving the Echo Chamber, Sharjah Biennial 14, UAE (2019); Art for Air Exhibition, Chiang Mai, Thailand (2021) and Bangkok Art Biennale, Bangkok, Thailand (2022).
Lertchaiprasert’s interest in collaborative art led him to cofound the land foundation with Rirkrit Tiravanija (1998)—which involved the conversion of rice fields into a place for artistic engagement. He founded the 31st Century Museum of Contemporary Spirit (2008)—which involved the conversion of body and mind into a place for artistic engagement (our body is our museum and spirit is art).
Since 2022 Lertchaiprasert has been working on a 5-year project, Self-Enquiry, to reexamine his past practice while creating new works in collaborations with people from various disciplines.
Lertchaiprasert now lives and works in Chiangmai, where he also exhibits his Self-Enquiry exhibitions at the 31st Century Museum of Contemporary Spirit (Office).
